More practice for new service staff: what Duolingo suggests about AI roleplay
Separate AI conversation practice from approval for real service duties. Duolingo offers a lens for designing a fictional hotel rehearsal and human assessment.

THE STARTING POINT
Can a new hire rehearse guest conversations without requiring a senior colleague every time? Duolingo’s scenario design and opportunities to ask for clarification offer a lens for practising approved information and separately checking transfer with a human. The hotel example is fictional, not implementation evidence or a promise of better service.
An AI conversation is not a readiness test
A&A perspective
A new hire has been taught how to guide international guests but freezes at the reception desk. The senior colleague also handles reservations and cannot act as a practice partner every time. For a small accommodation business in this situation, A&A proposes considering AI as a way to create more opportunities to speak before asking it to judge readiness. The decision here is which situations to rehearse and where human assessment begins, before choosing a product.
A&A perspective
A&A’s proposed distinction is between repeated practice and approval for real duties. Rehearsal should welcome retries; assessment should check whether the trainee conveys the property’s rules accurately, avoids promises they cannot authorize, and hands the question to the right person. Fluency would not justify expanding someone’s duties if they promised an unauthorized price change. A hesitant response that includes an appropriate clarification is still worth retaining.
Borrow the idea of designing the situation
From the sources
In its introduction to Max, Duolingo says people write Roleplay scenarios aligned with the learner’s progress. Experts also supply the opening message and guide the conversation’s direction. The company describes AI feedback after the exchange on aspects including accuracy and complexity. This is Duolingo’s product description, published in 2023 and updated in 2026.
A&A perspective
A&A’s application of that design is to have the workplace owner define the situation and its endpoint, instead of simply asking an AI to act as a guest. For a breakfast-hours question, specify what needs checking and which information completes the exchange. This is a proposed application by A&A, not a claim that Duolingo provides property-specific service training or certifies employees for those duties.
Make clarification part of practice
From the sources
Duolingo’s Video Call introduction says learners can ask Lily to repeat something or slow down when they do not understand. The company presents it as low-pressure practice without penalties for mistakes and says learners will not hear grammar corrections during the conversation. The referenced page was published in 2024 and updated in 2025.
A&A perspective
For service work, the useful exercise would include recovering a missed condition, not only keeping the conversation moving. One possible design is to avoid interrupting every verbal slip during practice, then have the property’s reviewer check important misinformation afterward. Encouragement or conversation length must not be treated as evidence that prices, times, or authority limits were correct. That boundary is A&A’s recommendation, not a finding from a study of service quality in the cited page.
Build one practice card for a fictional property
Hypothetical example
The following is a fictional training design. Choose a breakfast-location interaction and put approved fictional property information on a card: breakfast runs from 7 to 9, on the first floor. The trainee’s task is to clarify the requested time, give the hours and location, and refer an out-of-hours request to the responsible colleague. Do not use real guest names, reservation numbers, or recordings. The property and times are illustrative, not directions for a real hotel.
Hypothetical example
A rehearsal instruction could say: “Act as a guest asking in English about breakfast. Start with one simple question. Then ask whether 9:30 is possible. Do not change the property’s opening hours; accept referral to the responsible colleague. At the end, list requests for clarification and unanswered questions.” Treat that list as a draft to compare with what was actually said. If the AI invents access outside the stated hours, do not use that rehearsal for assessment; revise the card and instructions.
Hypothetical example
Afterward, a senior colleague plays the guest and changes the wording so that memorizing the earlier answer is insufficient. If the guest expects to arrive just after 9, check whether the trainee avoids an unsupported promise and can explain who will confirm what. Record the conditions conveyed, clarification sought, handoff recipient, and unresolved point, rather than just a good or bad score. Keep rehearsal and readiness records separate; completing an AI conversation does not automatically become a pass.
Keep human rehearsal where judgment is the task
A&A perspective
This approach is intended for situations where approved information and a referral contact can be specified in advance. It does not propose extending conversation practice into authority over compensation, refund negotiation, emergencies, or unsettled property policy. If the difficulty itself is unclear, or the main objective is to observe in-person behavior, beginning with human-observed practice may fit the purpose better.
A&A perspective
Both sources describe language-learning features from the provider’s perspective. A&A does not use them as evidence of fewer complaints at Japanese accommodation businesses or as proof of staff competency. Before adopting a service, separately check support for your own training material, handling of audio data, supported languages, costs, and terms. The illustration and property scenario are explanatory concepts, not A&A implementation experience or customer outcomes.
Measure practice and transfer separately
A&A perspective
Before a trial, record how much practice-partner time the senior colleague currently spends on the chosen situation, where the trainee stalls, and what misinformation occurs. After introduction, check both whether speaking opportunities increased and whether the trainee can convey conditions under different wording and refer unresolved questions. A person should assess the latter. Keep later workplace rechecks and misinformation separate too; more repetitions alone should not be called improved service quality.
A&A perspective
Include the cost of maintaining practice cards, correcting invented settings, supervisor review, service use, and updates to property information. If reduced partner time is outweighed by extra review and corrections, narrow the situations or return to human-led rehearsal. Time released is initially capacity; claiming a profit benefit requires checking what that capacity was actually used for.
Start with one situation and an accountable reviewer
A&A perspective
The first deliverable is a one-page brief of approved information, prohibited promises, the handoff recipient, and human assessment criteria. The senior colleague should be able to explain it before it becomes rehearsal material. For the broader starting decision, see the related article “Where should a small company start with AI?” When consulting A&A, sharing the situations that lack rehearsal and the available human review capacity will make the trial scope more concrete than beginning with a tool name.
Use AI to create more rehearsal opportunities for situations with approved information and a known referral route. Base expanded duties on human-observed accuracy, clarification, and handoffs in a different situation, rather than conversation length. Start with one practice card and a responsible reviewer, then judge whether continuing is worthwhile after preparation and correction costs.
