AI advisory vs a development company: deciding what to build for customer support
When the deliverable is clear, you can approach a developer directly. When it is not, you need requirements work, not necessarily an adviser’s title. A development company may provide that work itself.

The decision in front of you
An owner answers customer messages each evening and is considering a chatbot, but has not defined permitted answers or identified the relevant customer records.
Compare the actual work
Typical scope to check in a proposal; individual providers may combine both approaches.
| Dimension | AI advisory | Development company |
|---|---|---|
| Client effort | Explain unresolved choices and make priority decisions. | Explain the workflow, provide data, review specifications and test acceptance. |
| Output | A direction, evaluated options and an order of work. | The agreed system and contracted code, documentation or operating materials. |
| Evidence needed | Inquiry categories, response workload and difficult decisions. | Input formats, access rules, correct examples, exceptions and integration specifications. |
| Implementation | Advice-focused; construction requires a separately agreed scope. | Clarify which requirements, design, delivery and testing activities are included. |
| Operating owner | An internal person implements the decisions. | Agree who handles outages, incorrect answers and content updates. |
| Contract checks | Boundary between consultation and development. | Acceptance, maintenance, changes and handover of data and code. |
A hypothetical example
Hypothetically, half the inquiries ask about opening hours while others concern refunds and tailored quotes. Updating an existing FAQ may solve the first group. Before specifying automated refunds, define when a person must decide. If the FAQ is sufficient, do not build a system. If answers require customer-record matching and the rules are clear, take those requirements to a developer. The split is an illustrative assumption, not a measured client result.
What changes the business outcome
Track unanswered requests, effort correcting bad guidance and whether important messages reach staff. Faster responses alone are insufficient. A low development quote can still harm margin if the system creates commitments the team must later undo.
Which conditions favor each option?
AI advisory
Consider advisory for recurring business decisions. A single bounded specification may only need a one-time requirements engagement.
Development company
Approach development directly when objectives, data and acceptance are clear, or when the developer offers requirements discovery. An advisory contract is not a mandatory preliminary purchase.
Compare the cost structure
Separate advice from requirements, implementation, testing and maintenance. Integrations, permissions and failure handling affect development scope. Compare deliverables and ownership over the same operating period instead of comparing a monthly fee with a project total.

- Which wrong-answer and human-handoff examples will acceptance testing cover?
- Who changes the system when opening hours or commercial terms change?
